The collection is located in the former Provincial Bank building, which was constructed by Victorian architect Thomas Manly Deane in 1881. The building previously served as a bank up until 1977. The Jackie Clarke collection opened in 2013 after his wife Mrs. Anne Clarke gifted all of his collection to the county, delivering the wishes of her late husband. The Jackie Clarke Collection is said to be one of the most important collections of Irish historical material within the public hands.
The collection includes over 100,000 items including rare books, newspapers, letters, prints, photographs, maps, political cartoons, proclamations, autographs and hunger strike material. The collection has a significant national importance in connection with the 1916 Easter Rising. Items which are associated with some of the most authoritative figures of the 1916 Easter Rising are displayed as part of the collection. Some of these important figures include, PH Pearse, Thomas Clarke, Eamonn Ceannt, Thomas MacDonagh, Sean MacDiarmada, Joseph Plunkett and James Connolly. Also displayed are items linked with Michael Collins, Michael Davitt, Theobald Wolfe Tone, Dr. Douglas Hyde and Rossa O’Donovan.
